The Trafford Youth Chamber Orchestra developed from the Trafford Training Orchestra when there were only two orchestras in the organisation (about 1975). It consisted then of any players who were not of sufficiently high standard to play in the Trafford Youth Orchestra (now the Trafford Youth Philharmonic Orchestra).

This meant there could be as many woodwind players as strings and was very difficult to balance as an orchestra!

As more ensembles came into existence, the Chamber Orchestra became a conventional symphony orchestra with a quadruple woodwind and a balanced brass players section, much as it is today. This format enabled wind and brass players to gain experience of solo playing as preparation for moving on to the Youth Orchestra. In May 2002 the name was changed to Sinfonia.

There are currently 60 members,all players gaining entry by informal audition. Rehearsals are held at Sale Grammar School, Marsland Road, Sale from 7.00pm to 9.00pm every Friday during term time.
