All parents of players in any TYO ensemble are automatically members of the Friends. The aims, as defined by the Constitution are,
- to foster interest in the orchestras,
- to raise funds for their benefit and actively support their endeavours.
The objective of the Friends, put simply, is to assist the tutors in the well being of the ensembles. There is a small, elected committee that meets with the tutors on a regular basis to discuss the needs of the orchestras.
The committee assists at concerts by operating the box office, running raffles and, at the concerts where professional catering is not available, providing the refreshment service. The organisation and staffing of the Tuck Shop on rehearsal nights and, more recently, the provision of door security is carried out by parents. The money at the disposal of the Friends is used to supplement the resources of the orchestras at concerts and to purchase instruments that are of a specialised nature, for example, large brass and woodwind instruments.
