I started at the music service when I was 10 years old to learn the saxophone. I chose saxophone because I wanted to learn another instrument and the sound and style of its playing really appealed to me. I began in a class with two other people. At first I wasn't too keen on the idea of group lessons but found that it was more fun and I was also able to learn from the other people around me. It was only a small group so I still got a relative amount of individual attention. I originally chose the music service because it meant I could try the saxophone and see whether I wanted to continue in it without committing myself and buying one straight away. After 2 years I decided to leave the music service because I wanted to become more serious about it and take grades etc. But even though I took that step the music centre had given me the start I needed. I still play the saxophone aged 15 and am working towards my grade seven in the autumn. Shortly after I stopped learning saxophone there, I took up the double bass. I then got shorter individual lessons partly because no one else was taking the double bass. This meant that because of my previous musical knowledge and the individual lessons I picked it up quite quickly and joined the string ensemble. This meant I had the opportunity to play with other musicians, at first I found this quite challenging as I was so used to playing by myself. I now do double bass outside of the music centre. I would recommend the music centre to anyone, it has a lovely approach and atmosphere and is perfect is you are unsure of the instrument you are choosing or don't wish to buy an instrument immediately. My brothers still attend the music centres; one on a Friday and the other on Saturdays. They have done so for sometime now and continue to enjoy their lessons. |
